Which cars were voted safest in 2023?
One of the most important features people look for in a vehicle is safety. An important question to ask when researching this topic is “how well will my family be protected if you get in a fender bender or an accident?” One of the best ways to ease your mind is through the research of the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS). The IIHS is a non-profit organization that conducts research on vehicles to see how safe they are. This research takes several aspects into account, but the main two are crashworthiness and crash prevention. A good thing to note is that the IIHS is no longer evaluating roof strength, head restraint, and vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention due to industry progress which makes these features less relevant.
The IIHS has two different types of safety ratings: Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+. Here are the requirements for each.
Top Safety Pick Requirements:
- Must earn “Good” rating in crashworthiness test.
- Must earn an “Advanced” or “Superior” rating with the front-crash prevention systems.
- Must receive an “Acceptable” or “Good” rating during side crash test.
- “Advanced” or “superior” rating in daytime pedestrian test.
- “Acceptable” or Good” rating for headlight standards.
Top Safety Pick+ Requirements:
- Must earn “Good” rating in crashworthiness test.
- Must earn an “Advanced” or “Superior” rating with the front-crash prevention systems.
- Must Receive a “Good” rating during side crash test.
- “Advanced” or “Superior” rating in daytime and nighttime pedestrian test.
- “Acceptable” or Good” rating for headlight standards
